MEADOWLANDS FRESHMEN FEATURED IN NEW JERSEY SIRE STAKES

-- Greg Reinhart

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ -- July 8, 2017 -- The New Jersey Stakes prelims for 2-year-olds continued on Friday night at the Meadowlands with $20,000 splits for both sexes and gaits.

The 2-year-old filly trot was held on the pari-mutuel card, and Princess Marxxx (Andy Miller), who was second last week, led through panels of 29 3/5, 59 3/5, and 1:29 1/5 on her way to a one and a quarter length decision in 1:57 4/5. Diamondstone Us (David Miller) was second, followed by last week's winner Be Bop Sally (Andrew McCarthy), who broke in the stretch while positioned third. Samis Rolin Stone (Dewayne Minor) and Far From A Wish (Yannick Gingras) rounded out the order.

Justin Lebo trains the victorious daughter of Wishing Stone for owner/breeder Steve Stewart. This was her first win from two starts, and she has earned $15,000. The 7-2 second choice, Princess Marxxx paid $9.80 to win. Princess Marxxx is the second foal out of the Muscles Yankee mare Grace Marie, who was fourth in the 2010 New Jersey Sire Stakes final for 2-year-old trotting fillies and a qualifier for the Merrie Annabelle final the same year.

The colt trot, colt pace, and filly pace were all staged as non-betting events before the main card, and all three round one winners would repeat.

First up was U Need Stones (Gingras), who would hold off pocket-sitting Shoshie Deo (Minor) to claim the colt trot by half a length in 1:55 2/5. They were followed by Brutal Storm (David Miller) and Paging Doctor Teo (Sergio Corona).

U Need Stones is trained by Ron Burke for owners/breeders Burke Racing Stable LLC., Weaver Bruscemi LLC., and Larry Karr. U Need Stones, who dropped his lifetime mark from 1:59, is the first foal out of the SJ's Caviar mare Sequin Hanover, a half-sister to four six-figure earners.

The filly pace was a four-horse affair, and Hurrikane Empress (Gingras) made a first-over move into the lead before the 1:25 2/5 three-quarters and went on to prevail by a length in 1:53 1/5. Hypnotic Tale (David Miller) was second-best, with Cruzinforavictory (Andy Miller) and Dream Police Woman (Scott Zeron) taking third and fourth, respectively.

John McDermott trains Hurrikane Empress, a filly by Hurrikane Kingcole, for owners/breeders Jonathan Klee Racing and Kuhen Racing LLC. and their partner Pegasis Investment Group. Hurrikane Empress, who is the first foal out of the Somebeachsomewhere mare Hurrikane Schmumma, won for the second time in her third parimutuel start.

Melanie's Fran (David Miller) and Hypnotico (Zeron) match-raced each other in the colt pace again, and Melanie's Fran would jog to a 20 3/4 length victory in 1:55 1/5. Melanie's Fran is trained by Kevin McDermott for owner/breeder Francis Azur. Melanie's Fran is the third foal out of the Jenna's Beach Boy mare Natalie ($504,461).
