THE RECORD

A proposed Hard Rock Casino project was announced on Wednesday at the two-year-old Meadowlands Racetrack grandstand, which would become the gambling site’s neighbor if the necessary approvals are obtained.

Hard Rock’s chief executive, Jim Allen, said the $1 billion plan would feature 5,000 slot machines and more than 200 table games with 12 to 15 restaurants, and could open as soon as the summer or early fall of 2017.

But state Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Gloucester, whose backing of a statewide referendum in November on ending Atlantic City’s casino monopoly is crucial, last month questioned whether it would wiser to postpone the vote by a year based on an expected low turnout this fall.

Nearly a dozen North Jersey elected officials who attended the announcement responded by insisting in impassioned speeches that the vote should happen this year.

Allen and the track’s operator, Jeff Gural, reiterated that some of the tax revenues from the new casino would go to help Atlantic City recover economically. Allen added that because Hard Rock has sites in 64 countries, a Hard Rock Meadowlands casino would attract many of the millions of foreign tourists who visit Manhattan annually.

The announcement that an estimated 2,360 jobs would be created during construction drew cheers from laborers who attended the press conference at the track’s Victory Sports Bar. The casino also would create 5,000 permanent jobs, officials said.

“This is not a fight between North Jersey and South Jersey,” Gural said. “We’re fighting New York and Pennsylvania – we need to bring back the people in northern New Jersey who now travel to those casinos.”
Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, D-Essex, estimated that Sweeney would need to be won over and that the ballot question would need to be drafted in the next 30 days.
