MISSION BRIEF, GUESS WHO’S BACK & FRENCH LAUNDRY WIN OPENING ROUND NJ SIRE STAKES

MANALAPAN, NJ – May 15, 2015 – Mission Brief, the Two-Year-Old Trotting Filly of the Year in 2014, coasted to victory in her season’s debut, a $25,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes, the 11th race on Friday, May 15, 2015 at the Meadowlands.

Earlier in the card, Guess Whos Back and French Laundry won their 2015 debuts in $20,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes divisions for three-year-old trotting colts and geldings. Both winners are sons of Muscles Yankee.

For some of these three-year-old trotters, the road begins to the Hambletonian or Hambletonian Oaks on August 8.

Mission Brief, the 1-9 favorite, did not disappoint as driver Yannick Gingras let her settle in early, moved her at the quarter and claimed the lead before the half. The daughter of Muscle Hill drew off to a two and a half-length victory over Riley’s Dream [Muscle Hill]. It was five and a half lengths to Marion Millionair [Muscle Hill] in third.

Mission Brief

Mission Brief, who set the two-year-old trotting world record of 1:50.3 last year at the Red Mile, crossed the wire in 1:53.4.

The Ron Burke trainee has 10 wins in 14 career starts and earnings of $601,070 for partners Burke Racing Stable LLC, Our Horse Cents Stables, J&T Silva Stables LLC and Weaver Bruscemi LLC.

“She had a ton of trot,” said Gingras. “She went in 1:53.4, and it was a walk in the park for her. We still have some work to do before the second Saturday in August, but she is on the right track.”

Guess Whos Back, who won the New Jersey Sire Stakes Final at two, turned in a sharp effort, brushing to the lead before the half and scored a length and a half victory over Aldebaran Eagle [Muscle Hill] with four and a half lengths back to Canepa Hanover [Muscle Hill] in third.

Guess Whos Back

Brian Sears guided the 4-5 favorite to his third career victory and a lifetime best of 1:54 flat in the second race. He has now finished in-the-money in five of nine starts, pushing his earnings over the $100,000 mark.

Guess Whos Back is trained by Nikolas Drennan and races for Joseph Davino of Clarksburg, NJ and Brad Shackman of Calgary, Alberta.

In the fourth race, French Laundry sprinted to the lead on the backstretch but was tested by Muscle Diamond [Muscle Hill] in the final eight of a mile, holding on for a three-quarter length victory in 1:53.1. Total Darkness [Muscles Yankee] was third by five and a half lengths.

French Laundry

French Laundry, driven by Brett Miller and trained by Jimmy Takter, improved his lifetime record to eight wins, one second and two thirds from 13 tries and lifted his earnings to $323,119. He races in the name of Christina Takter of East Windsor, NJ and the Ontario quartet of John Fielding, Jim Fielding, Marvin Katz and Al J. Libfeld.
