MANASQUAN RESIDENT POINTS FINGER AT CHRISTIE'S BAD BET

LETTER: CHRISTIE’S GAMING POLICY HAS HURT AC, NJ
Asbury Park Press 4:16 p.m. EDT August 25, 2014

The closing of three casinos in Atlantic City serves as a punctuation point on the failure of the Christie administration’s gaming policy.

Early on, Christie turned his back on the racing industry, making a huge bet on Atlantic City. The horse racing industry and the casinos had a long standing agreement for subsidies to the tracks, in exchange for an assurance that the tracks would not seek slots at their venues. Christie arbitrarily eliminated the subsidies, while at the same time loading up Atlantic City with state projects and tax breaks. This cut the legs out of the racing industry, putting them at a disadvantage with tracks from neighboring states. While our tracks declined, millions went to Pennsylvania and New York tracks with casino gaming.

The implementation of these policies have damaged racing throughout our state. The horse industry has a wide-ranging impact, with farms, trainers, grooms, vets, feed and tack shops, track employees — all adding to the economy of many counties and towns in the state.

The farms also help to preserve open space. The racing industry had no problem having the subsidies eliminated. But to do so with Christie refusing to even entertain the idea of slots at the track hurt the industry deeply. This was a bad bet that Christie made, and he should be man enough to correct it in time to save Monmouth, Freehold and the Meadowlands from becoming shopping malls and parking lots.
