GOVERNOR CHRISTIE JOINS STATE SENATE PRESIDENT SWEENEY IN JUMPSTARTING DEBATE ABOUT FUTURE OF ATLANTIC CITY’S GAMING MONOPOLY
POSTED ON THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2014 6:03 PM
BY JOHN BRENNAN

Governor Christie on Thursday echoed state Senate President Stephen Sweeney’s newfound willingness to consider an end to Atlantic City’s casino gambling monopoly, telling reporters, “It’s a conversation I’m willing to have.”

Until this week, Sweeney had backed Christie’s plan announced in Feb. 2011 for a five-year moratorium on any discussion about possible casinos in North Jersey or elsewhere in the state. But Sweeney told The Record’s Editorial Board on Wednesday that he had quietly been having conversations with North Jersey stakeholders for the past year.

Sweeney added that there was a “very real possibility” that a statewide ballot question could be included for the Nov. 2015 elections, saying that it was too late to do so this fall. Atlantic City’s continuing struggles, Sweeney said, mean that he must consider proposals that could divert much of the tax revenues from a casino in a site such as the Meadowlands to help Atlantic City.

“I think I read pretty carefully what he said, which is that there’s a lot of stuff that needs to be done and talked about between now and then,” Christie said at a press event in Point Pleasant in comments transcribed by colleague Melissa Hayes. “That’s why I think pushing it out to fall 2015 makes sense. We have to stay committed to Atlantic City, but we also have to remain competitive in the region.”

Christie said Sweeney framed the discussion “in a very reasonable way.”
