NEW OFF-TRACK WAGERING SITE OPENS IN BAYONNE

A new off-track wagering site in Bayonne that opened on Tuesday is expected to do for New Jersey what Yonkers Raceway has done for New York — attract gambling dollars from a neighboring state.

“We see Staten Island as the biggest market for us to capitalize on,” Meadowlands Racetrack spokeswoman Amy Silver said before the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the $18 million site on Route 440, about a mile from the Bayonne Bridge. “We know from our rewards program that we have a strong pool of players there.”

Jeff Gural, the operator of the Meadowlands track and of the Winners Bayonne OTW, can expect to benefit from New York City closing its three Staten Island Off-Track Betting sites in December 2010.

“I used to go to the OTB [in Staten Island] sometimes,” said Bayonne resident Bill DeVenuto. “But now, it’s their turn to come to us, and make this place a success.”

State Sen. Ray Lesniak, D-Union, said such a development would be “phenomenal.”

“But they still have to find a way to make the tracks [in New Jersey] have a really elite racing card,” said Lesniak, one of many politicians who attended the ribbon-cutting. “That’s the thing that really attracts people to the tracks and gets them to bet. Unless we can do that, this here is not enough to save the industry.”

Tom Luchento, the president of the state’s harness racing industry, conceded that some of the Bayonne regulars will simply be former Meadowlands railbirds.
