BIG JIM’S SOPHOMORE CAMPAIGN WILL OPEN IN THE NJ CLASSIC

MANALAPAN, NJ – January 26, 2011 -- Big Jim, the Dan Patch Award winning Two-Year-Old Pacer of the Year, will make his 2011 return to the races in the Anthony Abbatiello New Jersey Classic in May at the Meadowlands.

His owner James Carr told Bob Heyden of the Meadowlands staff that he is pointing the son of Western Ideal to the New Jersey Classic for three-year-old New Jersey-sired pacers which is sponsored by the SBOANJ.

“I figure he'll qualify once in Florida first, then a qualifier at the Meadowlands, then the New Jesey Classic elimination [on May 21] and hopefully the final [on May 28],” said Carr. “I was just going over my stakes schedule for the year, and I have a lot of races for him at the Meadowlands. I'm going to sneak in a New Jersey Sire Stakes leg, too. I want him to have a little bit of an easier race, and then get him to the final for $200,000."

The schedule Carr has for Big Jim after the New Jersey Classic includes the Burlington, renamed the Somebeachsomewhere, the North America Cup and then a week off before the Meadowlands Pace.

“You have to put them in with the best if you want to get noticed as the best,” Carr noted.

Last year Big Jim set a world record of 1:49.1 when he won the Governor’s Cup at Woodbine.

"If you saw him right after the Governors Cup, you wouldn't have known he had just raced,” Carr said. “That's one of the reasons I put him in the Little Brown Jug also. I'm not afraid of the half miler,-not at all, or heats. This colt can handle it. But I am spreading his races out. I don't want to gut him."

Big Jim, who won six of 10 starts, including the Breeders Crown, at two, was trained by James “Friday” Dean and driven by Phil Hudon.

"I'm bringing Phil along with me to the Dan Patch and the O'Brien Awards,” Carr explained. “He did a great job for us last year."

Another guest of Carr’s at the awards banquet on February 27 at the Marriott in Ft Lauderdale, FL, will be trainer Stew Firlotte.

"I was in the business from 1975 to 2002,” Carr said. “I got to know Stew Firlotte, and he trained for me and is one of my best friends. Stew's had some health problems. He has his good and his bad days. After I had gotten out of the business in 2002 I came back in 2009 with a couple of yearlings just because of Stew. He is the reason I returned to the game. One of those yearlings was Big Jim. This year I have eight yearlings who just turned two and a couple of three year olds."

When Big Jim, who earned more than $800,000 in 2010, races at the Meadowlands this year, he will be reporting to the Ray Remmen Stable.

“I can talk to Ray, and I've always had respect for him,” Carr noted.
